Agility means finding new ways to do things that work for you during certain stages of your life. That’s how the weekly basket was born. You see before we were trying to deal with the mail daily when it came in, but it was honestly piling up in places that just weren’t great. You know what I mean if you’re looking at your kitchen counter and see the stack right now. So, I needed a solution.

For me, I bought a hanging file. Then, I put folders inside of it for Mail, To File, Medical Documents, To Scan, To Shred, and Coupons. This allows me to file everything where it goes and to do the work once a week.

What goes in each file?

The mail folder gets any mail that actually needs to be dealt with this week. We usually do it on Saturday or Sunday. We didn’t set a specific day because we don’t plan our weekends in such a way that allows us to always know where we’ll be or what we’ll be doing. Plus, we love having some flexibility to not feel guilty about things being put off til later.

To file contains anything we need to keep usually for taxes but there might be other reasons as well.

Medical documents are anything that we might need to provide on a moment’s notice like allergy information.

To scan contains documents that we need to keep but we don’t need physical copies of and then these move to the shred folder after they’ve been scanned.

To shred is anything that we don’t want running loose in the world. This contains ALL those credit card applications you get in the mail or those loan offers.

Coupons are where we keep active coupons aside from Bed, Bath, and Beyond. The Bed, Bath, and Beyond ones never expire so they go in a larger folder and stay in the car for when we are near there.

This allowed for everything to get off our counter but also for us to be able to process the mail in a timely manner.
